Choosing Nontoxic Products

If you read my birthday post about 29 Things I want to do in my 29th year, you know that one of those things is eliminating toxic chemicals from our home.

Since the beginning of our infertility journey I’ve been learning lots of new things about what may be affecting us/me, and changes we can make for the better. Especially in cases of unexplained infertility like us, it’s a good idea to try anything and everything. Kind of attack from all angles. One thing I’ve been learning is that toxins in the products we use in our every day lives can play a huge factor in our health (especially hormone health).

Our skin is our largest organ, and just consider for a moment all the products we put on our skin on a daily basis. In the shower maybe you use shampoo, conditioner, body wash, possibly shaving cream, face wash, maybe and exfoliant. Then you get out and put on deodorant, body lotion, face moisturizer (I’m sure I’m forgetting something). And let’s not even get started on make up (maybe 5-10 products??). Long story short, we’re using a LOT of products on our skin just in the morning. Then all those things sit on our skin ALL. DAY. LONG.

FUN FACT: The European Union has banned or restricted 1400 harmful ingredients from cosmetic products, while the US has only banned/restricted 30? Crazy!

There are a lot of reasons that these are harmful and I honestly don’t know all of them. But what I do know is certain chemicals can be endocrine disruptors. That means they affect our hormones in an unnatural way. Here’s a quote from the Environmental Working Group:

“There is no end to the tricks that endocrine disruptors can play on our bodies: increasing production of certain hormones; decreasing production of others; imitating hormones; turning one hormone into another; interfering with hormone signaling; telling cells to die prematurely; competing with essential nutrients; binding to essential hormones; accumulating in organs that produce hormones.”

You can read a list of the top 12 ingredients that they recommend avoiding here.

It can be an expensive process to eliminate all the toxic ingredients and products from our homes, so I haven’t switched out everything yet. I’ve been slowly switching things out as I run out.

My absolute favorite products so far are from Primally Pure. Their products are affordable and everything smells good and works even better! (And the best part is I have a discount code for you! Keep reading!)

Here’s what I recommend starting out with:

DEODORANT: I love their deodorant so much! I honestly think it works better than any other “normal” deodorant I’ve used. They have lots of different scents to choose from. My favorites that I’ve tried are Lavender and Lemongrass. I’ve heard a lot of great things about the new Charcoal though. (They even offer a monthly auto shipment so you don’t have to remember to order every time!)

LIP BALM: Lip balm is something I use ALL DAY LONG. Constantly, so it’s important to make sure it’s a safe choice (and effective!). I’ve tried Creamsicle and Mint and love them both.

CLEANSING OIL: This one is my new favorite. It sounds crazy to wash your face with oil, but what they say is like dissolves like. Essentially, the good oil in the cleanser grabs and dissolves the unwanted oil and grime on your face and in your pore.  I’ve been using it for about two weeks and my face is BABY soft and my blemishes have all cleared up. (Which is even faster than they say will happen.)

They have lots of other incredible products, all of which are on my must-try list, like the Citrus + Mint Body Butter and the Dry Shampoo. They also carry baby products AND something for the men in your life.

If you’re ready to start transitioning to a more nontoxic home, this is the best place to start. Enter code NOURISHEDLIFE at checkout to receive a 10% discount!! This code is only good until the end of June! (That’s just 6 more days!) You won’t be disappointed.
